12-Minute Standing Ovation for Del Toro’s Frankenstein at Venice

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein was welcomed at the Venice Film Festival with a 12-minute standing ovation. Screened in competition, the film is vying for the Golden Lion. So far, it holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73% score on Metacritic.

Oscar Isaac stars as Dr. Victor Frankenstein in this 150-minute adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, while Jacob Elordi plays the Creature. Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and Charles Dance also appear in the cast.

Del Toro, who won the Golden Lion in 2017 with The Shape of Water—later winning the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director—said just hours before the festival’s opening that he had long been waiting to direct Frankenstein: “I waited until I could make the film under the right circumstances, both artistically to achieve the scope needed for something different, and at a scale that allowed us to rebuild that entire world. Now I’m experiencing postpartum depression.”

Frankenstein will be released in theaters on October 17 and stream on Netflix starting November 7.
